Nuke Planar Track

In this second Nuke project we created a planar track. The idea was to get an image to track across a section of footage - blending into the scene.

The initial node graph looked like this. I added the footage, then created a postage stamp connected to it that acted as a second point to edit the footage from. I used backdrop nodes for organisation. I used a reformat node to ensure that the clip was 1080p.

I then created a read and write node of the footage. On this read node I added a roto shape which I would use to create my planar track. This was a pain as the roto shape often tracked off the wall and I had to manually adjust it for every frame to keep it on the wall.

I then created a read and write node of the footage. On this read node I added a roto shape which I would use to create my planar track. I selected the corner pin tool in the toolbar at the top.

By adding a checkerboard I could see any distortion in the track and how it looked against the wall. After a few adjustments it lined up and tracked well across the wall. I connected the footage and the planar track to a merge node leading into the viewer. At this point I could swap the checkerboard for the graffiti image.

From here, I will add the graffiti and remove the background from it. After this, the planar track will be complete.

I found this task much more difficult than the plane animation task. There was a lot of different parts to implement and understand, and I had issues with getting the roto shape in place and keeping up with the task.
