The Manadalorian: Creating The Razor Crest

The Razor Crest is the ship featured in the Star Wars series 'The Mandalorian'. Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) is the vfx company who created the ship. Some of the members who worked on the team are:

- Doug Chiang: Design Supervisor

- Ryan Church: Concept Design Supervisor

- Jay Machado: Model Supervisor

- Richard Bluff and John Knoll: VFX Supervisor

It was designed based on military style vehicles, and was made to look like an older vehicle than those shown in the Star Wars films.  A physical, miniature model was made and used for many of the shots. Shots of the ship were made to look like those from the original trilogy, using the miniature model instead of a digital model. There was a lot of physical work made on the model and the setups made creative use of stands and camera movement. The ship was made out of a reflective metal material, so creative measures had to be taken to ensure the reflections were accurate to the environment.

I think that this workflow improved the quality of the show. The use of traditional techniques like miniatures helped to capture the feeling of the original Star Wars films, which I think is important for a show based on classic films. The team seemed very passionate about working on the project and there was a lot of creative freedom that gives the show more character than if it were to use conventional, digital methods.
