Art Introduction

Art in the Industry

In the industry, art is mainly used for conceptual art in pre-production. Characters, environments and objects are sketched out in order to create an early impression of the style of the production. Artists are often given a brief - a set of instructions about a task - that they are tasked to complete. Successful artists use different techniques to create high quality art: light, composition, perspective and volume.

Drawing Techniques

This is all well and good, but many people - myself included - see these artworks as an impossibility due to their drawing skills... lacking slightly. We've had a look into some different techniques and pointers for using a pencil more effectively.

The first of these methods was using the pencil to measure scale. If you like to look like Picasso while you sketch your masterpiece, this will do the job. The idea is that you hold your pencil out and use it to measure each part of the drawing using your thumb, in order to avoid wonky proportions. Can't lie, I wasn't a huge fan of this as it was a bit awkward, but I can see the use of it if you struggle with proportions and scale.

The second method - more of an exercise - was drawing a subject without once looking at the paper. While this isn't actually a very viable method it is good to look at the subject more than you look at your paper. This resulted in a few... interesting scribbles, but I understood the idea that this is a skill that needs to be practiced.

We also had a look at some shading techniques. We tried a few different shading methods. The usual back and forth shading was applied to a sphere, as well as some cross-hatching.
